About Dr Lizzie Mackriell (Counselling Psychologist for York Therapy Clinic)
Dr Lizzie Mackriell is one of our dedicated Counselling Psychologists at York Therapy Clinic, offering specialist psychological support for both adults and children across a broad range of emotional, behavioural, and mental health challenges.
Lizzie provides an integrative and person-centred approach to therapy, combining evidence-based models such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Her work is guided by the belief that every client’s experience is unique, and therapy should be shaped around their individual needs and goals.
Lizzie supports clients with difficulties such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, emotional regulation, bullying, and chronic health conditions.
She also has extensive experience working with individuals with Autism and ADHD, helping them navigate the social and emotional challenges that can accompany neurodiversity.
Therapy for Adults & Children in York
Lizzie’s therapeutic work spans adults, children and young people, offering a compassionate and supportive space for clients of all ages to explore their thoughts and emotions.
Her approach focuses on building emotional resilience, improving self-understanding, and developing practical strategies for managing distress and life challenges. She places strong emphasis on collaboration and empowerment, helping clients take an active role in their therapeutic journey.
With a creative and flexible approach, Lizzie adapts her methods to suit the developmental needs of each client, often integrating play or creative techniques when working with younger children to make therapy more engaging and accessible.
Experienced Counselling Psychologist York
Lizzie’s professional background includes experience in both NHS and private settings. She has worked within an NHS Access Team, delivering DBT-based brief interventions for anxiety, low mood, and emotional regulation difficulties, in both one-to-one and group formats for adults.
Lizzie has also spent over five years conducting assessments and providing one-to-one therapy for children, young people, and adults presenting with a wide range of challenges.
Her work within school-based programmes has focused on improving emotional wellbeing and attendance, supporting young people with school attendance issues, behavioural difficulties, emotional regulation, bullying, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and grief.
These experiences have allowed Lizzie to develop a deep understanding of how family, education, and environment can influence a person’s mental health and emotional development.
Journey into Psychology
Lizzie’s path into psychology began early in her studies at York St John University, where she discovered her passion for understanding people’s experiences and the transformative power of therapy.
Her own experience of therapy deepened her appreciation for the value of psychological support and self-awareness, inspiring her to help others cultivate the same insight and wellbeing.
Creative & Compassionate Approach
Lizzie brings creativity and warmth into her practice, often incorporating imaginative techniques and mindfulness-based exercises to help clients feel safe and engaged in therapy.
Her doctoral thesis explored how creative methods can enhance the therapeutic process, particularly in helping children feel comfortable and understood.
Outside of her clinical work, Lizzie enjoys being creative in her spare time, always having a craft project to hand to help unwind on an evening. She also enjoys being in the countryside or by the sea, in addition to regularly practicing Yoga and Pilates.
Lizzie is passionate about supporting clients through life’s challenges, helping them to feel heard, validated, and capable of positive change.
