EMDR in York

Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful type of therapy that can help individuals to overcome traumatic or difficult emotions, memories, and experiences.

EMDR therapy is a relatively recent therapeutic approach that uses eye movements, hand tapping, and auditory stimulation to help you process and heal from past trauma.

At York Therapy Clinic, we offer EMDR therapy in York as an alternative approach for individuals who may find talking therapy difficult, or for those who have experienced a traumatic experience that they are struggling to process.

How EMDR Works

Unlike traditional talk therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), EMDR therapy focuses movements, gestures and sounds that activate both sides of the brain (“bilateral stimulation”) to reprocess events and emotions.

This is achieved by thinking about difficult or “stuck” memories that cause distress, while simultaneously following a patter of specific movements, taps, or sounds guided by the therapist.

This stimulation is thought to activate areas of the brain responsible for memory processing and emotion, including the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex, to reprocess the memory so that it becomes less intense and unstuck from its emotional home.

By activating these areas areas of the brain while thinking about the memory, EMDR helps reprocess the memory in real-time and detach the negative emotions associated with the memory.

As a result, those experiencing EMDR often feel calmer and are able to move forward from their difficult experiences where the content of the memory feels too difficult to talk about.

EMDR has been shown to be effective in a number of research studies and its effectiveness has now been demonstrated in problems such as depression, anxiety, difficult childhood experience and even overcoming breakups.

What Can EMDR Help With?

EMDR is an effective treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other issues stemming from difficult memories.

It can however also be beneficial for those who are struggling with:

  • Past memories of abuse (including neglect, bullying, physical, or sexual abuse)
  • Difficult childhood experiences
  • Trauma from accidents (e.g., car crashes, medical procedures)
  • Military combat experiences
  • Domestic violence
  • Grief and loss
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Nightmares and intrusive thoughts (linked to past trauma)

Overall, EMDR has been shown to be effective for a range of problems, and can help as either a support to other talking therapies (such as Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Counselling) or as a therapy in its own right.
