About Jeanette Richardson (Child Counsellor for York Therapy Clinic)

Jeanette Richardson is a dedicated and compassionate counsellor based in Haxby, offering in-person and online counselling for adults, children, and young people through York Therapy Clinic.

She provides a warm, relational, and integrative approach to therapy, tailoring her work to meet each client’s individual needs. She supports people experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including anxiety, stress, depression, relationship issues, grief, menopause, and low self-esteem.

Jeanette is also experienced in working with phobias and PTSD, using approaches such as Guided Imagery and the Rewind Technique, as well as providing adoption support counselling.

Her approach is grounded in Person-Centred Therapy, CBT, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Psychodynamic and Systemic Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Attachment Theory, allowing her to adapt sessions to suit the unique experiences and goals of each adult or child she works with.

Experienced Counsellor in York

Jeanette holds a First Class Honours Degree in Contemporary Relational Counselling and a Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People, with over 650 clinical hours of counselling experience.

Her professional experience includes working with Doncaster College, where she supported clients with trauma, anger, anxiety, grief, and experiences of abuse.

Jeanette has worked sensitively with survivors of physical, sexual, and substance-related abuse, managing safeguarding concerns with care and professionalism.

She also works with Community Counselling, providing therapy for adults, children, and young people affected by domestic violence, sexual abuse, bullying, and trauma, deepening her expertise in supporting individuals through some of life’s most difficult experiences.

Throughout her career, Jeanette has supported people from diverse backgrounds, including refugees, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Her ability to meet clients with empathy and understanding allows her to build strong, trusting relationships that empower lasting change.

Personal Journey into Counselling

Jeanette’s journey into counselling was inspired by deeply personal experiences. She volunteered as a Samaritan for three years, motivated by supporting a close family member through challenging times.

After receiving counselling herself for several months and finding renewed clarity and resilience, she was inspired to retrain as a counsellor, in order to support others on their journey towards wellness and happiness.

Whilst training at university at the age of 58, she was diagnosed with dyslexia; an experience that gave her a new understanding of her own challenges at school and deepened her empathy for young people who struggle with learning difficulties or feel misunderstood.

Her life experience, warmth, and resilience shine through in her therapeutic work, allowing clients to feel comfortable, valued, and supported in exploring even the most difficult emotions.
