About Matt Scandle (Sports Psychologist for York Therapy Clinic)
Matt Scandle is a dedicated Sports Psychologist here at York Therapy Clinic, specialising in helping athletes and performers enhance both their mental performance and overall wellbeing.
Working with both adults and young people aged 14 and above, Matt supports athletes, coaches, and performers across a wide range of sports and performance settings to build psychological flexibility, focus, and resilience.
His work is underpinned by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and informed by elements of existential psychology, providing a framework for athletes to connect with their values, manage pressure, and perform at their best both in and out of competition.
Sports Psychology York
Matt offers sports and performance psychology sessions in York for those seeking to improve performance, manage competitive anxiety, or enhance overall mental wellbeing.
He has extensive experience working in professional sport organisations, providing psychological support to players, coaches, parents, and performance staff.
His work focuses not only on developing peak performance but also on maintaining balance and wellbeing within high-performance environments.
Matt understands that the mental side of sport is often what differentiates good athletes from great ones. His sessions aim to help individuals increase their mental clarity, self-awareness, and emotional control under pressure, allowing them to reach their full potential.
Professional Experience
Alongside his doctoral studies at the University of Portsmouth, Matt has spent approximately five years working as a Sport and Performance Psychologist, supporting performers across various disciplines.
He has provided tailored psychological services to elite and developing athletes, helping them to manage the mental demands of training, injury recovery, competition, and personal development.
Matt’s applied experience has given him a strong understanding of the psychological challenges faced by performers at all levels, from those just entering competitive sport, to professionals seeking to sustain high performance.
Pathway into Sport Psychology
Matt’s interest in sport began long before his career as a psychologist. Having played club cricket for many years, he became deeply curious about the mental challenges that accompany competitive sport.
His own experiences inspired him to explore how psychological approaches could improve both performance and personal wellbeing.
That curiosity evolved into a passion for helping others realise their potential, not only by improving performance but also by supporting the mental health and resilience required to thrive in high-pressure sporting environments.
Matt continues to be inspired by the athletes and performers he works with, viewing sport psychology as a partnership aimed at unlocking confidence, focus, and purpose in both sport and life.
